Rock of Ages

I’m a big theatre buff, thanks in part to my old and true friend Jamie who took me to see RENT in middle school, which left an impression on me; probably because (and I didn’t know it then) I had watched it with my Broadway idol Ms. Idina Menzel, and what a damn voice on her.

I also owe it in part to my mom, who many years later, exposed my sister and I to as many shows as possible including, but not limited to, my favorites: Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, Mamma Mia, and here are the Playbills… well as many as I could fit in my hand!

While I’d love to go off about every show I’ve seen, I’m only writing about Rock of Ages (for now) because I have a picture on my phone that I’d like to delete, but feel guilty doing so without posting it somewhere; of the stage!

That being said… I’ve added Rock of Ages to my roster of shows. Definitely a fun time, to say the LEAST; great music, dancing, acting, 80′s metal and featuring most importantly Journey.

Synopsis: In 1987 on the Sunset Strip, a small town girl met a big city rocker and in LA’s most famous rock club, they fell in love to the greatest songs of the 80s. It’s ROCK OF AGES, an arena-rock love story told through the mind-blowing, face-melting hits of JOURNEY, NIGHT RANGER, STYX, REO SPEEDWAGON, PAT BENATAR, TWISTED SISTER, POISON, ASIA, WHITESNAKE and many more. Don’t miss this awesomely good time about dreaming big, playing loud and partying on!

One minor complaint…. The music was actually absurdly loud, and while I know it’s a ROCK CONCERT, there were moments I wanted to walk out because the singing, over the electric guitars (fighting to be even louder) was overwhelming.

On the flip side, and who else to find this as one of the most interesting parts, a great marketing bit interjected. We all know that during the slower rock songs you put your lighters up! The thousands of flames give the show a short period of calmness, a soft moment in darkness; to pay respect to the band and the touching music, as well as a tribute to rock n roll.

WCBS FM 101.1 branded “lighters”! So during some of Journey’s classics…. In the darkness, bright lights “flames” swayed slowly. Loved it.
